ECDA supports organizations in turning data into business and societal value through strong areas of expertise. There are foundational expert practices, covering organization and governance of AI, methodologies for data analytics & AI, and human behavior and social impact of AI. Next to that, several expert practices have in-depth expertise on the application of data analytics & AI in a specific domain, such as health, ports & logistics, smart cities & communities, fintech and retail.

Trustworthy & Accountable AI

Explore organisational compliance assessments, fraud detection, and valuation of assets with audio-visual data. This lab builds on the inherent advantages of the accounting profession to provide businesses with an insight into the quality of data, algorithms and their value for the business.

AI, Digital Communication and Behavioural Change

Developments in communication technology open up unprecedented opportunities for healthy and sustainable ways of changing behaviour. We study how the benefits of digital technology can be optimally used for a healthy and sustainable lifestyle, while keeping potential risks at a minimum.

Bioinformatics

Bio informatics focusses on translational medicine by combining inter-disciplinary data and resources, as well as expertise. Molecular biology techniques require computer science expertise, information engineering, mathematics, and statistics to support the diagnostics of complex patients.

Digital Business

The exponential improvements in artificial intelligence, robotics, networks, analytics, and digitization affect more and more of the economy and society. Digital Business aims to explore how people and businesses will work, interact, and prosper in an era of profound digital transformation.

FinTech

The FinTech Expert Practice aims to promote and streamline (interdisciplinary) academic research in FinTech, align it with the needs and interests of industry, distribute knowledge to pre- and post-experience audiences, and be a knowledge centre for parties inside and outside the university.

Law & Digital Compliance

What rules and standards are needed for Big Data and AI to support us in our own needs? How to prevent these technologies from being at the expense of our society? Is the established legislation resistant to accelerated digitisation? And to how to bridge legal shortcomings by the new legislation? Digital Governance (DIGOV) brings EU awarded excellence in research.

Trial Design & Experimentation

New developments in machine learning have the potential to dramatically improve experimentation and clinical trials by making them more efficient, safe, and accessible. From a business perspective, the massive adoption of the Internet by virtually everyone made it easy to run large-scale online experiments to identify the best ways to communicate and interact with consumers.

Psychology of AI

The successful introduction of advanced analytics, whether in companies or market offerings, ultimately rests on human users’ beliefs and adoption behaviour. The Psychology of AI lab examines the impact of AI on consumption and society, decision making with data, consumer adoption of AI solutions, psychological reactions to human replacement and technological unemployment.

Smart Energy & Sustainability

Big data, analytics, blockchain, IoT and data platforms can help cities and communities become more sustainable and efficient. Energy markets are dynamic and complex, and the shifting landscape they operate in, requires a broad spectrum of knowledge combined with cutting edge research techniques and technologies using data analytics and smart tariffing.

Sustainable Global Supply Chains and Ports

Sustainable Global Supply Chains and Ports focuses on sustainable development and management of global supply chains and ports. The acquisition and sharing of data among various organizations and its use in advanced information services play a central role. Our academic activities, often with the involvement of public and private parties, include but are not limited to the application of data analytics and AI in port logistics and in sustainability efforts in global supply chains.

Health & Management AI

The research agenda addresses national and international policy priorities, like the modernization of primary care, the diversification of the health care work force or the use of big data to increase efficiency in health care.

UX Research and Global Tech Design

Our research into UI, UX, friendly interfaces and automated processes allow for data-driven solutions guaranteed to deliver results. Integrating academic solutions with global practice creates a seamless flow of information that any business can take advantage of.

Retail analytics

The retail value chain has witnessed an influx of new technologies and adoption of new business models. This has led to an abundance of data sources. Converting these big retail data to actionable insights requires the use of advanced analytics in many retail decision areas such as warehousing, transport, store operations, and restaurants. The Retail Analytics Expert Practice advances research on retail analytics and engages in an ongoing dialogue with practice on this topic.

Inclusive Smart Cities & Communities

The utopian image of smart cities tackling urban problems poses a natural question: what impact will this have on democracy? Who will own the data generated by the citizens? How will this influence political decisions? While urbanization and smart cities will have positive upsides, it is imperative to understand the interactions created and their impact on diversity and democracy.

Media, AI, Privacy & Surveillance (MAPS)

Developments in new media and communication technologies have produced new opportunities and promises for a better future. Yet these also bring numerous concerns related to personal, social, political and economic life. MAPS examines these opportunities and concerns as social, political, and ethical issues connected to new media practices. The focus is on the proliferating use of AI, everyday privacy negotiations, various forms, types and means of and for surveillance, and (cyber) security contexts and challenges.

Cybersecurity

As the investments in cybersecurity will rise in the future through developments such as robotics, the ‘internet of things’ and blockchain, so will the need for a societal debate about the efficiency of those investments. The mission of CLECS: ‘Creating a stronger public discourse regarding efficient cybersecurity investments’.

Virtual & Augmented Reality

New technologies, such as VR and AR offer many opportunities and challenges for businesses, which in turn will have a lot of consequences for consumers across all stages of the customer journey. It is expected that VR and AR will entail a lot of benefits for business, for example for the development, launch and communication of new products, or in helping technicians in production processes.

Data Science Methodology

The data science field is rapidly developing with new methods and models. Our academic experts are on the forefront of these methodological developments. We work on advancing methodology without losing track of the applicability of the methods. With a large team of experts, we cover many sub-fields of data science from machine learning to text analytics and from robust statistics to optimization and high-dimensional Bayesian modelling.

Customer Analytics

The emergence of information and data technologies, together with the sophistication of tools in data analytics, have led to a radical shift in the way marketing operations are run. The focus of companies has been shifted away from product-centric approaches and mass marketing campaigns to customer-centric campaigns tailored to the needs and wants of each individual customer.
